Ally de Beer completed their BA (Hons) in Theatre and Performance at UCT, graduating at the top of their directing class with a distinction in drama. 

After landing an internship with SA Film Academy they entered the world of film and have since worked their way up the AD department on larger international film sets, whilst also working as a 1st AD on a range of smaller, local short and feature length films. 

With a focus on empowering indie filmmakers and local storytellers, Ally has built a reputation as the go-to young 1st AD for artistically driven films. They are an AD who is known not just for keeping a shoot on schedule, but for leading the crew with passion, consideration and a calm confidence that allows for our local talent to shine and make the most of our often limited resources. Through their role as an AD they developed a passion for cultivating change in the local film industry - seeing the need for a shift in culture. They have ambitions to contribute to shaping an industry which empowers local talent and stories through creating efficient, safe and positive creative environments throughout the production process.

Getting their training as an intimacy coordinator through Safe Sets thus seemed like a natural progression for their career - and an opportunity to utilize their theatre training and experience.
